Trichology – The Science of Hair

What is Trichology?

Trichology is the para medical science of the hair, hair loss, and associated scalp problems. Today, trichology is perceived as the “bridge between cosmetology and dermatology.”

A trichologist is a specialist who studies the diseases or problems related to the scalp as well as their treatments. Trained in life sciences, they look at hair loss problems in a holistic way by evaluating clients on the basis of personal history, lifestyle, genetic factors and environmental conditions. Based on this information, a trichologist is able to suggest individualized treatments, give nutritional advice and recommend lifestyle changes to improve the health and appearance of the hair and scalp.

Scalp Problems

Most common scalp problems seen by a trichologist are:

  • Dandruff (called Pityriasis capitis or Pityriasis simplex). The yeast Malassezia ovalis has a major role in triggering the condition. Usually characterized by diffuse loose white flaking.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin disorder that mainly affects the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, and behind the ears. Usually characterized by yellow flaking and some skin redness (erythema).
  • Psoriasis on the scalp is a bright pink, very inflamed skin covered in thick silvery scales. Usually characterized by severe itching (pruritus) and bleeding when scratched.
  • Oily scalp can often leads to greasy, limp, unmanageable hair.  The amount of oil that your scalp produces can depend on many things, including diet, stress, hormonal changes, genetic factors, age, etc.

Hair Terminology

Terminal hair is thick and long. During puberty, the increase in androgenetic hormone levels cause bell is hairs to be replaced with terminal hair in certain parts of the body.

Intermediate hair has characteristics that are between vellus and terminal or between .03mm and .06mm in diameter.

Vellus Hair is the fine wispy hair that covers most of the body.

Treatments

There are three things approved by the FDA to grow back hair or prevent hair loss. LED Therapy, Finasteride (Propecia), and Minoxidil (both oral and topical.)

Revian Red is our personal favorite laser hair cap. In just 10 minutes-a-day, our convenient at-home therapy utilizes a patented combination of powerful red (660nm) and orange light (620nm) – the Right Light – clinically proven to grow more hair in less time than other hair loss products.
